The brand new Minions movie is out, this one titled Minions and Monsters, as the Minions conjure up a little guy named Goomi. But before the yellow Minions ever made audiences laugh with jokes about séances, magic, and the occult, Hollywood had already spent nearly a century weaving witchcraft, paganism, ghosts, sorcery, and the supernatural into family entertainment. From Disney's first animated feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and its spell casting queen and enchanted potions to Lonesome Ghosts, Fantasia, The Sword in the Stone, The Black Cauldron, The Little Mermaid, Moana, and now the latest Minions movie, the occult has often been presented as humorous, harmless, or even heroic.
