Zack Snyder has directed some of the biggest films of the last two decades, from 300 to Watchmen, Man of Steel, and Batman v Superman—movies that have influenced millions. But what is it that has influenced him? In a recent interview, Snyder tried to distance himself from right-leaning allegations by calling his movie 300: "one of the gayest movies ever made," argued that movies need more eroticism, and then revealed something even more important: the spirituality behind his filmmaking. Snyder says that his worldview is an, quote, "alchemy of Christian Science and Joseph Campbell," describing Jesus as essentially, quote, "a dude who figured it out" and saying, "We are all Superman, and we are all gods on Earth." This matters because ideas don't stay inside books and philosophy. They influence filmmakers, filmmakers influence movies, and movies influence us.
